Cyclone : Natural or Man Made ?

According to a data released by Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reveals that the number of Cyclones in Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal has increased by 32% in last five years. This alarming data reveals some another factors behind the causes of cyclones. This sharp rise in the number of cyclones reminds the question whether it is a natural phenomena or the mankind is responsible behind this rise in the numbers.

Naturally cyclones are formed when the sea surface is warmed and a sudden decrease in pressure is seen at the surface of the sea. then wind from surrounding high pressure area comes at the centre of low pressure area and creates a cyclonic storm. Tropical cyclones occur in the months of May-June and October-November.

The Indian subcontinent is one the worst affected regions in the world, that witnesses nearly 10% of world's tropical cyclones because of its large coastal area. On an average 5-6 cyclones are seen in the Bay of Bengal and Arabian sea per year. But there were seven cyclones each in 2018 and 2019, the highest since 1985.

Recently, Cyclone Yaas in the Bay of Bengal and Cyclone Tauktae in the Arabian sea have shown its grim nature. Cyclone Yaas in Bengal and Odissa and Cyclone Tauktae in Maharashtra and Gujarat destroyed everything which came in their way. Besides, cyclone Nisarga, Amphan, Kyarr, Maha, Vayu, Hikka, Fani and Bulbul have affected the south-east region of Asia in last few years. Most of them were recorded in India.

So, other than natural causes the rise in number of cyclones can be traced with the rise in temperature at the sea surface due to Global warming, increasing air pollution , green house gases and climate change. The main sources of the pollution are fossil-fuel consumption and biomass burning, which deposit black carbon in the atmosphere, with serious negative consequences for human health. This pollution produces brownish clouds of aerosol particles that can be several kilometres thick. In the absence of strong reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, future greenhouse gas forcing to substantially larger increases in tropical cyclone intensities. The rapid increase of industries, cutting of trees, avoidance for the environment have forced the nature to show its more disastrous nature.

The natural disasters are not in our hand but their terrible effect can be reduced by some effective measures. Only nature can save us from this phenomena. So we need to give attention to conserve nature by planting more trees, reducing greenhouse emissions and climate change.
