Impact of COVID-19 On Education

The COVID-19 pandemic had a huge impact on every sector not only in India but also around the world. But its impact on education system was massive. But the impact of the pandemic on Education sector has been underestimated by the Government , for which the country must face the consequences in coming days .

Since one year the central and state governments have been busy in curbing the spread of coronavirus, ramping up testing capacity , strengthening the health care system , vaccine production, economy, industry etc. But what about education ?

Since March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic hampered the education system, when the govt. announced nationwide Lockdown. All schools, colleges, universities, institutions were closed for indefinite period . According to the report by UNESCO, the pandemic has impacted around 120 crores of students worldwide and 32 crores of students only in India . Among them 14 crores of primary students and 13 crores of secondary students are mostly affected by this pandemic.

But the one positive impact of COVID-19 is the innovation of e-Learning and technology in education system . Digital education has shown a ray of hope in this sector . e-Learning has become the only way to run the education system in this situation. But Online education also has some loopholes. The reality is India does not have necessary arrangements to adapt this system.

Still in many areas in the country , network connection is too poor to attend online classes. So many families in India does not have smart phones. Also the lockdown stopped the economic activities and people became jobless , so they didn't have the money to get their internet connection back. So the facility of e-education has been limited among some students .

Yet, the private schools are running the classes through online, but the students are not able to cope up with this system. They lack the environment of offline classes. As the primary schools are totally closed the early learners in rural areas have not learn anything in this one year. Thus the impact will be seen in future .

The education system in India is standing at the same position where it was at the beginning of the pandemic. The difficulties in online education have not been corrected. So the students are deprived of the "Right to Education". Also the pandemic destroyed the schedules of the education system. The board exams of class 10 and 12 have been postponed or cancelled . The government does not have alternative way to take exams.

e-Learning has the power to change the face of the education system in a new direction but the loopholes must be corrected through Government initiatives.
