What Is Black Fungus ?

 


      Black Fungus disease has entered in the health care system of India as a new threat amid COVID-19 Pandemic. Mainly the post-covid patients have been developing a rare and life threatening fungal infection and now it is spreading throughout the country. So let us know about the disease.   

      What is Fungi(plural of fungus) ?

     Black Fungus infection is not a new disease. Every year it infects many people around the world . Fungi is one of the members of the living organisms different from the plant and animal kingdom. They are found in plants, soil, water, air, damp places and decaying organic matter like rotten leaves, bread etc. They play a very important role in the ecosystem. Fungi are beneficial as well as harmful. Some important fungi are household yeast, molds, mushrooms(edible fungi), penicillium, aspergillus etc. But some fungi causes various disease in human, animals as well as plants.

      How does Black Fungus infect ?

      Black Fungus, known as Mucormycosis, is one of the members of the kingdom Fungi . The infection is caused by  some molds, which live throughout the environment and air. They affect those people, whose immune system is very weak and those who have very high blood sugar level and cancer patients. The Fungus enters in the human body through body cuts, abrasions on the skin, sometimes they spread through bloodstream, invade the blood vessels, affect brain, eyes, spleen and heart.  

      Why is it spreading in india?  

      As the covid-19 cases are rising in India the black fungus cases are also increasing simultaneously . As it was told that it infects the people with low immune system, the coronavirus has been decreasing the immunity power of the infected person. One of the important reasons behind this is the excessive use of steroids, which is used in treating covid patients with serious illness. 



      Symptoms :

      The symptoms of black fungus infection are-

 • One sided facial swelling

 • headache 

 • fever

 • stuffy nose

 • blood, blackish, or brown discharge from nose

 • blackish discolouration of the skin 

 • tooth ache

 • drooping of eyelids

 • double vision

 • redness of eyes

 • sudden decrease in vision

Cases in India :

       More than 9000 cases have been reported in India and around 250 patients have lost their lives. And the fatality rate of this infection is 54%.The infections have been reported in nine states and spreading in different states too. The governments of Rajasthan, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Gujarat and Bihar have declared the black fungus infection as Epidemic.  

       So, the people should not create panic without knowing the fact as they did in the case of COVID-19. It is clear that the infection does not spread from one person to another. The patients with severe diabetes should check their sugar level at regular intervals. The post covid patients have to built their immunity power and maintain proper hygiene.
