Environmental Pollution : Its Causes and Effects

Environmental Pollution : Its Causes and Effects

World Environment Day is observed every year on 5th June. We celebrate the day by discussing the need to protect our environment and posting photos, wishes on social media and the very next day we forget everything. Environment has given us everything what we need, but we, the mankind has tried all means how to destroy it.

Now it seems the nature is taking its revenge. Our surroundings have been heavily contaminated by our bad habits. The air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we take soil, rivers, oceans, everything is polluted. The environmental pollution is not only the issue of urban areas, now pollution has spared  in the rural areas too. Mostly the developed and developing countries are responsible for this hazard.

     Air Pollution :

Industrial development is the main source of air pollution. Toxic gases from factories contaminate the air. Trees are being cut to set up industries. With the rising population the number of vehicles have increased. Lack of enough roads, parking facilities long traffic jams are seen in many cities. These issues enhance air pollution. Thus air pollution has forced the mankind to breathe polluted air and so many diseases like asthma, skin disease, cancer etc. have increased rapidly for that.

Stable burning is also a huge cause of air pollution in Northern India. Every winter the farmers burn the remaining part of the corps and black smoke covers the entire area. In winter some cities witness Air Quality Index(AQI) above danger level.

Household pollution also a major cause of air pollution. Still in rural areas cooking is done with coal and knobsticks.

     Water pollution :

Large amount of industrial and municipal waste are discharged into rivers or lakes without any treatment. Thus water gets polluted with toxic chemicals. These contaminated rivers taking lives of many marine animals. The small rivers are now have been converted into drains. Garbage from surrounding areas are dumped on rivers. Through rivers the polluted water floats on seas and destroying the ecosystem.

     Soil Pollution :

Abundant use of chemical fertilizers, insecticides , pesticides is decreasing the fertility of soil. The foods and vegetables we eat are contaminated as they are being grown up with the help of chemicals and resulting various disease . Also the chemicals flow to the lakes and rivers and pollute water.

     Sound Pollution :

Sound pollution is the worst forms of pollution of modern day. When the pitch of sound crosses the bearable limit it can cause psychological damage, anger and depression. They often lead to deafness and heart failure. Indiscriminate use of microphones, loudspeakers, horns of vehicles cause noise pollution.

     Global Warming :

Global warming is one of the main threats to the environment. The temperature of earth and oceans are rising rapidly. The average temperature of earth could rise 2℃-6℃ by the end of 21st century . Greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide , methane etc. released in the atmosphere during the burning of fuels, coals. USA, China and India are top carbon emitter in the world. Warmer earth leads to climate change , changes in rainfall patterns, cyclones, rise in sea level, melting of glaciers, frequent floods, droughts, heat waves etc. If global warming is not controlled many coastal areas would go under the ocean .

     Deforestation :

Rising population has forced the mankind to cut forests and build industries, towns and agricultural areas. Trees are being cut rapidly and harming the ecosystem. Deforestation is causing frequent forest fire in different parts of the world. Wildlife animals are losing their habitats and incidents like man-animal conflict are increasing.

Environmental Pollution : Its Causes and Effects

      Conclusion :

World Environment Day once again showed us the problems and now it is our responsibility to take actions. Only the humans are responsible for the environmental pollution. But the price of pollution could be the death of mankind as well as all living creatures . We can only save the mankind by conserving nature. So, we must take every step to save this planet from environmental pollution.
